Three-Year-Old Frees Senior Neighbor Who Had Been Locked In Basement

A 3-year-old boy named Eyas Tran helped police find an elderly woman who was trapped inside the basement of her New Hampshire home for three days last month.

As unusual as it seems, children always seem to know exactly what to do in certain situations. Three-year-old toddler Eyas is the prime example of one such child. Little Eyas was out for a walk with his mother in the town of Hampton, New Hampshire when he made the discovery, as CBS Boston reports.

After a short while, something else caught Eyas’ attention. As they walked past the home of their elderly neighbor, Eyas expressed his desire to place the neighbor’s newspaper on her porch. “We consider her family,” Eyas’ mother told CBS reporters.

Eyas had often brought newspapers to his favorite neighbor’s home as she lived alone and was a very sweet woman. This was a kind gesture, something highly expected from the pure minds of toddlers.

However, the situation suddenly turned dismal as Eyas noticed stacks of untouched, old newspapers on his neighbor’s porch. Eyas hoped that nothing bad had happened to her, and it seemed unusual for her to not be home during these times.

Eyas quickly told his mother about the piles of newspapers and after multiple failed attempts at ringing the doorbell and knocking on the door, she called the local authorities to check the home. After the authorities arrived, it became evident that the toddler had saved his neighbor from a very bad situation.

In the check of the home, the authorities found the elderly woman trapped in her own basement. After taking a few statements from her, they also became aware that she had been trapped in the small corridor of her basement for three entire days, as CBS reports.

While her condition was poor, if not for Eyas’ act of kindness, his neighbor would have been in worse shape. David Hobbs, Deputy Police Chief of Hampton clarifies what happened.

“It was just one of those freak accidents where the door closed behind her, and she was stuck downstairs,” Hobbs told CBS reporters. Thankfully, when the neighbor was rescued, she claimed that she was okay and even happy.

“The female was in good spirits despite being trapped in the basement for over three days,” Hobbs said in a statement. Once the woman was rescued from her basement, she was immediately sent to the hospital where she was treated for a few minor injuries. Who knows what would have happened to her if not for Eyas!

“The Hampton Police would like to thank the young boy for his keen observation and we encourage residents to check on the elderly and vulnerable folks during these uncertain times,” the department stated.
